General

Where is Axon K9 based?

Axon K9 is based in Temecula, CA, and serves Temecula Valley and the wider Southern California area. In-home and Board & Train clients travel in from across Riverside and San Diego counties.

How do I get started?

Every case starts with the free behavior consultation. It costs nothing, carries no obligation, and it is the only responsible way to recommend a program. Call (619) 988-6624 or send the enquiry form.

What does training cost?

Board & Train starts at $1,000+ per week, private lessons at $150+ per session with packages available, and structured boarding at $70+ per night. Home School and Puppy Development are quoted as custom packages. The behavior consultation is free.

Do you work with aggressive dogs?

Yes. Aggression, reactivity, severe anxiety and fearfulness are core specialties, handled under strict structural safety protocols. Disclose any bite history when you make contact so the assessment is planned safely.

What breeds do you work with?

All breeds. Protocols are built around the individual dog's behavior, drive and stress response rather than around breed stereotypes.

Do you use positive reinforcement or corrections?

We build protocols on behavioral science and structural safety, matched to the individual dog and the driver behind the behavior. What we do not do is apply one fixed method to every case regardless of what the dog in front of us needs.

How long will my dog need?

That depends on the behavior, its history and household consistency. You get an honest estimate at the consultation rather than a package sold before anyone has assessed the dog.

What are your hours?

Monday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, by appointment only.

Free Behavior Consultation

Is the behavior consultation really free?

Yes. The consultation is complimentary and carries no obligation to book a program. We would rather tell you honestly what your dog needs than sell you the wrong service.

My dog has bitten someone. Will you still assess him?

Yes. Bite history is exactly the kind of case this consultation exists for. Tell us before the appointment so we can set the environment up safely and manage the assessment properly.

Should I bring my dog?

In most cases yes, because watching your dog work is a large part of the assessment. For severe aggression cases we may start without the dog present so we can plan a safe introduction.

Will you tell me my dog is beyond help?

If that is the honest answer, yes. Structural safety and welfare come before selling a program. Most dogs are far more workable than their owners fear, but we will never oversell a prognosis.

Board & Train

How long does Board & Train take?

Length is set by the case, not by a package. Obedience-focused stays are shorter; aggression and severe anxiety rehabilitation take longer. You get an honest estimate at your consultation.

Is my dog in a kennel all day?

No. This is a home-based residency with structured routines, training sessions, decompression and rest built into the day.

What happens when my dog comes home?

Handler participation is built into the program. You are taught the mechanics and given a maintenance plan, because results that do not transfer are not results.

Do you take aggression cases?

Yes. Structurally safe practice around serious behavior is a core specialty. Disclose bite history up front so the program is planned safely.

One-on-One Private Lessons

How many sessions will I need?

It depends entirely on the goal and how consistently the homework gets done. Simple etiquette issues can move in a handful of sessions; behavior modification takes longer. Packages are available.

Where do lessons take place?

Wherever the problem lives. That may be your home, a park, a parking lot or a busy street, because proofing has to happen where the behavior actually happens.

Can private lessons fix reactivity?

Often yes, provided the handler is consistent between sessions. For severe cases we may recommend Board & Train first, then private lessons to maintain it.

Do you train the dog or train me?

Both, but the lasting value is in you. A dog that only responds to the trainer has not been trained, it has been managed.

Home Schooling

Do I need to be home?

Not for the day-training sessions, which is the point of the program. You do need to be present for the transfer sessions at the end.

How is this different from private lessons?

In private lessons you do the training with coaching. In Home School the trainer does the repetitions for you, then hands the skills over.

Which areas do you cover?

Temecula and the surrounding Southern California communities. Contact us with your location and we will confirm scheduling.

Is it suitable for reactivity?

Yes, particularly for territorial and door-related reactivity, because that behavior is anchored to your home and is best worked there.

Puppy Development

How early should I start?

As early as safely possible. The primary socialization window closes sooner than most owners realize, and waiting until six months means working against habits instead of ahead of them.

Is my puppy too young for training?

Almost certainly not. Puppies begin learning long before they can perform formal obedience, and early conditioning is where the durable results come from.

What about vaccinations and socialization?

Socialization is planned around your vet's guidance, using controlled environments and exposures rather than uncontrolled dog parks.

Does this prevent aggression later?

Nothing guarantees it, since genetics and later experience both play a role. But early behavioral work meaningfully lowers the risk and makes later issues far more workable.

Structured Dog Boarding

What makes this different from a kennel?

Environment and management. This is a controlled, home-based setting run by a behaviorist, so structure and stress management are the priority rather than volume.

Will boarding undo my dog's training?

No. Structure is maintained throughout the stay, which is exactly why owners of dogs in training use it rather than a commercial facility.

Do you board reactive or anxious dogs?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons owners come to us. Space and introductions are managed specifically so those dogs are not put under pressure.

Can you give medication?

Yes. Feeding and medication protocols are followed exactly as you specify at booking.

Dog Aggression Rehabilitation

Can an aggressive dog actually be rehabilitated?

Many can be meaningfully rehabilitated, and most can be made safe and manageable. Prognosis depends on the driver, bite history, genetics and household consistency. You get an honest assessment, not a sales pitch.

My dog has already bitten. Is it too late?

No, but disclose it immediately so the case is handled with correct safety protocols. Bite history changes the plan; it does not automatically end it.

Do you use punishment to stop aggression?

We build protocols on behavioral science and structural safety, targeting the emotional driver. Suppressing a warning signal without changing the underlying state produces a more dangerous dog, not a safer one.

Will my dog ever be off-leash around other dogs?

That depends entirely on the case. We will tell you honestly what is realistic rather than promising an outcome your dog cannot safely reach.

Leash Reactivity Training

Why is my dog fine off leash but reactive on it?

The leash removes their ability to create distance or move away, which adds frustration to an already stressful moment. That constraint is often the trigger amplifier.

How long does reactivity take to fix?

It varies with intensity, duration and household consistency. Most owners see meaningful change within weeks; deeply rehearsed reactivity takes longer.

Is reactivity the same as aggression?

Not necessarily. Many reactive dogs want distance, not confrontation. But rehearsed reactivity can escalate, which is why early intervention matters.

Will a different collar or harness fix it?

Equipment can help you handle the dog safely, but no tool changes the underlying emotional response. That requires a protocol.

Separation Anxiety Treatment

Is my dog doing this out of spite?

No. Dogs do not destroy things out of revenge. The behavior is a panic response, and treating it as defiance makes it worse.

Will getting a second dog fix it?

Usually not. Separation anxiety is typically about the absence of a specific person, so a second dog often just means two stressed dogs.

Does a crate help?

For some dogs yes, for others confinement escalates the panic and risks injury. Which one applies to your dog is part of the assessment.

How long does treatment take?

Longer than most behavior work, because progress is tied to graduated tolerance that cannot be rushed. Consistency matters more here than in any other protocol.

Fear & Anxiety Rehabilitation

Should I comfort my scared dog?

Yes. You cannot reinforce an emotion the way you reinforce a behavior. Withholding comfort from a frightened dog does not make them braver, it makes them alone.

Will my rescue dog grow out of it?

Some improve with time and stability, but rehearsed fear tends to deepen rather than fade. Structured work produces far more reliable change than waiting.

Is flooding ever appropriate?

No. Forcing a dog to endure what terrifies them until they stop reacting produces shutdown, not confidence, and frequently creates aggression.

Can a fearful dog become normal?

Many become confident, functional and happy. Genetics set a ceiling in some cases, and we will be honest with you about where yours realistically sits.

Real-World Obedience Training

What age should obedience start?

Foundation work can begin in puppyhood, and adult dogs learn perfectly well. There is no age at which it becomes too late to build reliability.

Why does my dog listen at home but not outside?

Because the behavior was never generalized. Dogs do not automatically transfer skills across environments; proofing has to be built deliberately.

Do you guarantee off-leash reliability?

No responsible trainer guarantees off-leash reliability for every dog. We will tell you what your dog can realistically achieve based on the assessment.

How much homework is involved?

Enough that consistency matters. Short daily repetitions beat long weekly sessions, and we structure homework so it fits a real schedule.

Impulse Control & Structure

My dog gets two hours of exercise and is still wild. Why?

Physical exercise without regulation training builds stamina, not self-control. Many high-energy dogs need structured rest and impulse work far more than extra miles.

Is my dog just a high-energy breed?

Breed sets a baseline, but even high-drive dogs can be taught to settle. Drive and regulation are separate skills.

How long before my dog can settle?

Many households see meaningful change within weeks once structure and rest are in place, though duration work continues past that.

Does this help with reactivity?

Yes, frequently. Lower baseline arousal raises the threshold at which reactivity triggers, so impulse work supports the reactivity protocol.
